Since the Quebec faction of Canada took control of the Liberal Party our untrustworthy leaders have step by step tried to drive a political wedge between our natural, relationships with the U.S. and Britain. In their place has been a contrived yearning for all things French.
Well, here is a quick peek at an area of France's public sector. If it looks a bit like where we are headed as regards public servants here, you should not be surprised. France's Electricity Service is a giant government owned monopoly with some very juicy job rewards for its workers: lifetime employment, early retirement for 55 per cent of the workforce, pensions worth 75 per cent of the last year's pay, 32 hour workweeks for 25 per cent of the workforce and 35 hour workweeks for the rest, 90 per cent discounts on power bills, subsidized housing, meals, vacations and cultural events, free health-care, inflation adjusted pensions and seven weeks of paid holidays.
Little wonder the French are among the highest taxed citizens in Europe with a weak economy.France employs 6.4 million public-sector workers accounting for more than 25 per cent of the 24.6 million total workforce. Public sector employees and retirees account for 45 per cent of the French state's $400 billion budget. France controls nearly 1500 government run companies, including six giant groups such as the postal service, the railway, public transportation, the gas utility etc. Now France's socialist ways are catching up to it and it wants to privatize 30 per cent of the Electricity Service.
Our own public sector workers already earn considerably more than comparable private sector positions with generous inflation adjusted pensions, drug plans, accruable sick days, shorter than average work weeks and also enjoy protection from foreign and domestic competition, not to mention being represented by strong unions and accomodating politicians.
We are on track to become more like France and less like a nimble, vigorous, lower tax country where individuals are allowed to keep more of what they earn. Being taxed to death so that our government employees can live like kings and queens is not my idea of heaven.
